Modes of assisted Ventilation for intubated flute and electronics
(2014)
Assisted ventilation is the medical term for artificial respiration where mechanical means are used to assist or replace spontaneous breathing. This piece intends to explore the flute as an extension of the performer’s respiratory system seemingly assisted by a semi-automatic blowing machine. By means of a volume pedal and a hose projecting white noise into the instrument, the performer progressively sculpts the sound by using the flute and their own respiratory system as a filter, rather than a sound generator.
